Responding to long-standing issues pursued by the Commission for Women and new student calls for UT to provide affordable child care options for children of students, Chancellor Jack Reese appointed a committee in 1989, chaired by Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Bert Sams, to examine the issues and propose solutions. The committee recommended a long-range expansion of child care facilities at UT by establishment of a group of satellite centers to be operated by a central office through the Department of Child and Family Studies. Ultimately, the study proposed that the centers be able to accommodate a total of 535 children. As the first step of the plan, the Child Care Center for Children of Employees was incorporated into the College of Human Ecology.
