Check Cashing Card

In fall 1981, following a year in which the bookstore lost $3,200 on 2,700 bad checks in its check-cashing service for students, a policy was instituted that students wishing to cash checks at the bookstore had to have a check-cashing card, as well as an ID. Between fifteen thousand and twenty thousand check-cashing cards were issued to students during the first week of the quarter. After two months, approximately eight hundred students who desired to cash checks reported that they had lost their check-cashing cards, requiring workers to look through a three-thousand-name bad checklist for each check cashed. The use of the check-cashing cards was discontinued at the end of the fall quarter.
