Dr. White joined the faculty of the university’s Department of Economics in 1928 and retired in 1965. He was an expert on economics and public finance. He founded the university’s Center for Business and Economic Research in 1937 and headed the center until his retirement. He served as head of the Department of Finance (1957–65) and as director of graduate studies for the College of Business. In 1963 he was named Alumni Distinguished Service Professor. In addition to authoring numerous articles and reports on taxation and public finance, he served as a consultant to various state and local government agencies in Tennessee. His contributions to the intellectual life of the university have been recognized by placement of a plaque in his honor on a faculty study.
