UT celebrated the centennial of its chartering twice—once in 1894 and once in 1907. The institution that has become UT was chartered in 1794 as Blount College. It was rechartered in 1807 as East Tennessee College when it was designated the recipient of funds to be collected through the sale of lands agreed upon in the Compact of 1806. The UT seal also, briefly, in the early part of the twentieth century, carried the 1807 date.
