In fall 1951 UT instituted a uniform sign system for all campus buildings, showing the building name and the primary academic area served by the building. Physical plant workers made the signs, which were low brown signs with an inverted arch in the rounded top, on which off-white letters were painted. In 1967 Paul Arthur, the designer of the signs for Expo 67 (the World’s Fair held in Montreal), was commissioned to design a signage system for all exterior signs at UT.
