Knoxville’s Medic Regional Blood Drive and the Central Kentucky Blood Center of Lexington sponsored the first Blue/Orange Blood Drive the week of November 14–18, 1988, as a competition between UT and UK students and supporters, to donate blood prior to the annual football game. UT students, faculty, staff, and community members donated 1,607 units of blood, easily beating Kentucky’s 1,111 donated units in the first contest. UT also won the football game.
