Started by Ralph Boston in spring 1968, the Black Arts Festival was held during the third week of May through 1980. The purpose of the festival was to present to the university, and to Knoxville, examples and information about black culture and identity. The Black Ball, at which the Miss Black Arts Festival was selected, began in 1970.
