Biology in a Box

The UT Biology in a Box program began in 1996 at Powell Elementary School. The first box was titled “Fossils: True or False.” Primary funding for the project comes from the Howard Hughes Foundation and the Dwight Eisenhower Foundation. The program’s developer, Dr. Susan Riechert, designs boxes with biological or other scientific articles and prepares exercises for teachers to use in introducing students from fifth to twelfth grades to science and scientific methods. The program had expanded to all nine counties surrounding Knoxville by 2004. Some of the other boxes created by Professor Riechert and her team include “Of Skulls and Teeth,” “Fur, Feathers, and Scales,” “The Animal Kingdom,” “It’s in Your Genes,” and “Backyard Naturalist.” The program was a significant factor in UT’s winning a Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) grant to create VolsTeach, a four
