The Division of Continuing Education teamed with the Knoxville News-Sentinel and WBIR television to host a yearlong contest, How Do You See UTK? A Community Scrapbook (photo contest). Winners were announced on Charter Day, September 12, and the photos were displayed in an exhibit at the UT Conference Center. Best of Show and awards for first, second, and third place were given in eight categories: People, Agricultural Heritage, Architecture and Landscape, Humor, Sports, Historical Moments, Academic Endeavors, and Miscellaneous. One hundred fifteen photos were submitted. The winning photos captured diverse facets of the institution (e.g., sunbathing coeds on the roof of Sophronia Strong Hall in 1926, the UT Marching Band Volettes of 1938, and a graduation party in 1993). The contest received entries from as far away as Utah. Contest entries were judged by Milton Klein, UT Knoxville historian; Lynn Overholt, educator and civic leader; Gene Patterson, WBIR news anchor; Betsy Pickle, Knoxville News-Sentinel entertainment writer; and Maxine Thompson, director of the UT Knoxville Office of Re-Entry Students.
