Benita (Mosley) Fitzgerald

Benita Fitzgerald Mosley graduated from UT in 1984 with a degree in industrial engineering, four NCAA titles (including three 100-meter outdoor hurdles championships) and 15 All-American designations. A world-class athlete, she won a gold medal in the 100 hurdles at the 1984 Olympic Games, becoming the first African American to accomplish the feat and the second American, after Babe Didrikson Zaharias. She also won a gold medal in the 1983 Pan American Games and was a member of the 1980 US Olympic Team. She pursued an engineering career for six years in the design and implementation of software and hardware systems for navy, army, and air force defense contractors. In 1991 she began her career in sports marketing and administration as regional director for Special Olympics International in Washington, DC. She was program director for the marketing division of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games 1993–95 and served the USOC in a variety of roles beginning in 1995, including director of Olympic Training Centers from 1997 to 2000; director of the Olympic Training Center in San Diego (1995–97); and director of all public relations programs (2000–2001).

In March 2001 she became president and CEO of Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), and in 2004 was named Cable TV Executive of the Year by Television Week. She is a charter member of the Lady Vol Hall of Fame, was honored as one of 75 athletes in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Southeastern Conference, and was one of eight US Olympians to carry the Olympic flag into the stadium during the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics. In 2009 she was appointed chief of Sport Performance for USA Track and Field.
