The bust of General Douglas MacArthur was supplanted from its space on the second floor of the Austin Peay Administration Building in February 1945 by a display of two stuffed American bald eagles. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Jackson, of the Jackson Hereford Farms in Maryville, loaned the eagles. The eagles were shot when they were found killing and carrying away young pigs. One pig that was carried to the top of a tree weighed 18 pounds.
The wingspread of the male eagle was seven feet four inches; the female’s wingspan was seven feet one inch. Joe Studley Jr. of Alcoa mounted the eagles on a young dogwood tree. Josephine Ramsey, a student in Public School Art 191, painted the background for the display. She painted scenes for the three seasons the birds were on loan.
