Athletics Department Affirmative Action

In response to pressure from the Commission for Blacks to have the Athletics Department follow the same procedures and steps in hiring as the remainder of the campus, Dr. Andy Kozar, UT system affirmative action officer and executive assistant to the president, announced in fall 1979 that the Athletics Department would no longer fall under the campus affirmative action plan but would appoint its own affirmative action officer who would report to the executive committee of the athletics board. Dr. Luther Kindall, chair of the Commission for Blacks, sought a Faculty Senate investigation of the Athletics Department’s handling of affirmative action, saying that the new arrangement was “putting a wolf in a cage of wolves.”
