The UT Athletic Association was formed in 1884 to oversee the growing sports program of the institution. The Athletic Association was incorporated in 1907, and then reorganized, with Dr. Charles Wait serving as chairman of the Athletic Council. A board of directors of the Athletic Association was formed in 1937–38. It took the place of the Athletic Council but operated in the same capacity and was also composed of representatives from the Athletic Department, faculty, alumni, and student body. The name was changed in 1951 to the Athletics Department as the university brought the association into the university structure.
