In 2006 the NCAA implemented a system designed to hold athletics programs accountable for student athletes’ classroom performance by compiling an Academic Progress Rate to replace the standard that uses graduation rates. Each player on a team was eligible to receive two points each semester—one for being academically eligible to play and one for staying at the school. If a team’s total APR fell below the standard of 925, any “zero for two” student athletes could cause contemporaneous penalties for the team, meaning that the team could not re-award that grant-in-aid, thus reducing its financial aid limit. The total contemporaneous penalties a team could receive could not be more than 10 percent of the team’s total financial aid.
