Twenty-four-year-old UT alumnus Andrew K. Stern was killed in action under hostile enemy fire in the Anbar Province of Iraq on September 16, 2004. He was from Germantown, Tennessee. A Marine First Lieutenant assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary, Marine Corps Air Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, he had been deployed since April and was due to return to the United States in October. At UT he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, served on the Interfraternity Council as judicial vice president, and was captain of the men’s crew team. He grew up in Arlington Heights, near Chicago, and graduated from Culver Military Academy in Indiana. He was enthusiastic enough about his crew teams to have a crossed oars tattoo on his back—one in the colors of Culver Military Academy, the other in University of Tennessee colors. A third tattoo—a marine emblem on his right shoulder—represented his other passion.
