The American Society for Metals (ASM International) is a professional society for metals and materials professionals. It was founded in 1913 in Detroit as the Steel Treaters Club and evolved into the American Society for Steel Treating. In 1933 it expanded its focus and became the American Society for Metals. The UT student chapter was formed in 1958 as an affiliate of the parent Oak Ridge chapter of the ASM.
