Alpha Lambda Delta was founded at the University of Illinois in 1924 to recognize women who maintained at least a 3.4 GPA during their freshman year. The society also gave certificates to senior women who had maintained a 3.4 GPA and presented a book to the woman who graduated with the highest GPA. A sister organization to Cap and Gown, and with the same requirements for admission as the Phi Eta Sigma freshman men’s honorary, Alpha Lambda Delta was first installed at UT in 1932, with Dean Harriet Greve as faculty advisor. Louise Smith served as the first president.
