The Satim Bama Pimatisiwin Club was organized on June 24, 1917, for the purpose of promoting social life and good fellowship among its members. The club was granted a charter by Alpha Delta Pi sorority and installed as Alpha Kappa Chapter on May 1, 1920. In honor of its 50th anniversary on campus, Alpha Delta Pi gave the fountain outside the Clarence Brown Theatre. Founded in 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia, as the Adelphean Society, ADPi claims ownership of the title of oldest secret sisterhood for women.
A lion, Alphie, is the mascot of the fraternity; the official colors are azure blue and white; and the woodland violet is the flower. The open motto is We Live for Each Other. Campus traditions include the barn party and the black diamond ball. The philanthropy of the fraternity is the Ronald McDonald House. Notable alumnae of the national organization include Sue Harris Morton, founder of Refugees International; Helen Lee Caldwell, fashion designer especially noted for her Winnie the Pooh children’s clothing; Judge Shirley Baumgardner Underwood, named the outstanding juvenile judge in the US in 1994; and Deana Carter, country western singer.
The chapter’s house in Sorority Village, a 17,500-residential facility, was designed by Lindsay & Maples Architects.
