Alpha Chi Sigma, organized at the University of Wisconsin in 1902, is a professional fraternity for individuals who plan to make chemistry or chemical engineering their profession. A well-developed chemistry fraternity must have been in place for several years before petitioning for a chapter charter. At UT, in order to meet this requirement, Dr. Samuel S. Smith and 10 students met on November 4, 1923, to establish a Chemistry Club, which they named Gamma Rho. In April 1929 Gamma Rho petitioned Alpha Chi Sigma for a charter, and the chapter was installed on October 26, 1929. The chapter has been noted for tutoring and for helping to sponsor Engineers’ Day.
