Alexander Kelly, a Revolutionary War soldier, who was a member of the Territorial Assembly that chartered Blount College, was named in the charter of the proposed institution as one of its first trustees. He was lieutenant colonel of the Knox County Militia, a resident of Blount County, and served in the Tennessee House of Representatives.
