Academic Second Opportunity

In 1990 UT adopted an academic forgiveness policy that allowed special readmission for students dismissed because of failing grades after a four-year hiatus and restored the student’s eligibility to apply for financial aid. The Academic Second Opportunity Program was made available to students who were not successful in progressing toward a degree during previous attendance at UT but who reenrolled and completed at least 15 hours with a GPA of 2.5 or better, assuming they had not received a degree at any four-year institution and needed at least 30 hours to complete the degree at UT. The application of the second opportunity left all work attempted at UT (satisfactory and unsatisfactory) on the transcript but did not include in the GPA calculation work prior to readmission—the GPA is based solely on grades earned since readmission. Hours in the previous enrollment for which grades of A, B, or C were earned are computed as satisfactory and counted toward the degree.
