Prior to fall 2008, students whose GPAs fell below 2.0 for a semester and remained there after a semester on academic probation were dismissed from UT and had to wait a year before they could be readmitted. In fall 2007 effective for summer 2008, the institution put a limit on student dismissals and changed time frames and requirements for reapplying.
On a first dismissal, students were not allowed to reenroll for one semester, at the end of which readmission was granted if the student had no pending financial or judicial holds. A student dismissed for a second time because of a GPA below 2.0 had to stay out one year, take classes at another higher-education institution, and achieve at least a 2.5 GPA in those classes. A student who returned for a third time and did not achieve the 2.0 would be permanently dismissed.
With the new policy came new standards for academic probation, which would be imposed when the GPA neared 2.0, effective in January 2009.
