In December 1947 the Campus Chest Campaign was initiated to serve as a single avenue for soliciting charitable contributions from students, faculty, and staff. A budget was established for giving of the proceeds of the campaign to such entities as the Community Chest (now United Way), Infantile Paralysis Fund, Red Cross, World Service Fund, YMCA, and YWCA. Each student was asked to give a minimum of $3, and white buttons with UT Chest in orange were given to all who contributed at least the $3. A specific amount was set aside as a general fund for university contributions to miscellaneous drives that were initiated during the year. Students Lee Winchester and Jack Hamilton were cochairs of the first effort, and the goal was $14,175.
