Boxing

Boxing was introduced as an intercollegiate sport at UT in 1892, and meets were arranged with Vanderbilt, Lebanon, University of Virginia, Harriman, and Sewanee. After the initial year, boxing lagged in popularity and eventually faded away. In 1921 boxing was added to the required physical training course, and students with an aptitude for the sport could arrange for private lessons. In 1926 the Athletic Association sponsored classes in boxing and wrestling. A boxing tournament was held during the winter to determine winners in the various weights, and all winners were awarded medals. Boxing was included as part of the intercollegiate minor sports program in 1934, with matches against Mississippi State, Citadel, King College, and Alabama. H. D. (Breezy) Wynn served as boxing coach when the sport was revived. In 1981 the SAE fraternity initiated its annual boxing tournament.
