In 1942 UT instituted a program to train approximately sixteen hundred radio operators and technicians to assist in military and civilian capacities. Courses were offered in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Jackson, and Johnson City. The classes were open to both women and men. Applicants for admission to the courses were required to be high school graduates and to have taken at least two years of mathematics and one year of physics.
