World War II—Gas Rationing Cards

In November 1942 UT set up a gas rationing committee. On November 18, 19, and 20, all student car owners had to register for gas rationing cards. This was done not at UT but at the city or county school nearest the student’s residence. Each owner of a car was entitled to a Class A rationing card, providing four gallons of gas a week. Students who needed more than this amount to get to the university or—if they were also employed—to their jobs were required to file applications for additional gas by preparing forms provided by the Registrar’s Office. The university served as the qualifying agent for students to get additional gas.
