The elegant brick house at 1840 Melrose Avenue was designed for Mr. and Mrs. William Wallace Woodruff by their son-in-law, Albert Benjamin Baumann Jr., a member of the highly regarded Knoxville architectural firm of Baumann and Baumann. It was built in 1929. The carriage house of the Woodruff’s former Victorian home on Cumberland Avenue still stands. The Cumberland Avenue house was purchased by UT in 1926 and used as a women’s residence hall until construction of the library required it to be razed in 1930.
