When Ron Widby graduated in 1967, he had lettered in four sports at UT (football, basketball, baseball, and golf). A three-time letterman in both football and basketball, he was an acclaimed punter in football and was drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints. In basketball he was the first UT player to score 50 points in a game (against LSU, March, 1967), a record which would stand for 20 years. Widby, a graduate of Knoxville’s Fulton High School, won the Sporting News designation as All American punter in 1966 and in 1967 was designated as first team All-American in basketball by both the Associated Press and Helms Athletic Foundation (now First Interstate Bank Foundation).
