Jon Ewbank Manchip White wrote and edited stories for the BBC, served in the British Foreign Service, wrote screenplays, and was writer in residence at the University of Texas, El Paso. He joined the faculty of the university’s English Department in 1977 and was immediately made a Lindsey Young Professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. Upon his arrival at the university, he established the Creative Writing Program and directed it until 1988. He taught a wide variety of courses, many of which were “firsts” or pioneering efforts in the United States. He authored well over 30 books, some of fiction and poetry, others of travel, history, archaeology, music and musicians, North American Indians, and of himself. His contributions to the intellectual life of the university have been recognized by placement of a plaque in his honor on a faculty study.
