Walkway to the Strip

UT and the City of Knoxville jointly constructed a walkway for students to use in getting from Presidential Court to the Strip, which was finished in fall 1980. Planning began in the summer of 1979. The walkway extends about nine hundred feet from the presidential courtyard to Terrace Avenue and then to Lake Avenue. It was designed with stairs, handrails, fencing, and improved lighting. UT was responsible for excavating, constructing stairs, improving the lighting and handrails. UT spent about $17,000 on the project. The city was responsible for the three-hundred-foot portion extending from Terrace Avenue to Lake Avenue, along the edge of Mountcastle Park, and also for repairing a sidewalk from Lake Avenue to Cumberland Avenue. The city spent approximately $3,500.
