The Transportation Research Center of the College of Engineering was created in 1970 to foster and facilitate interdisciplinary research, public service, and outreach in the field of transportation. It began full-time operation in 1972 and also opened a satellite office in Nashville in 1972 to coordinate the management of the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s University Research Program and provide highway safety research for the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. It was first located in Neyland Stadium and moved in 1995 to the Conference Center Building. It is the UT interface with the National Transportation Research Center. Its Southeastern Transportation Center, a consortium of 10 universities, was created in 1987 by the US Department of Transportation and focuses upon transportation safety. The Southeastern Transportation Center established the Journal of Transportation Safety and Security, publishing the premiere issue in March 2009. The Transportation Research Center also operates the Tennessee Traffic Safety Resource Service and the Tennessee Transportation Assistance Center.
