The 1986 Torch Run across the state of Tennessee celebrated the 150th anniversary of the UT Alumni Association. A Torchbearer Reunion was held during homecoming, and a Torch Lighting Ceremony at Circle Park officially began the Torch Run, as John Fisher, class of 1938, lit the torch that Alan Cates (1967) carried through Neyland Stadium during the halftime of the UT-El Paso football game. The first runner (Track Coach Doug Brown) started from Knoxville on October 6, and the last returned to the UT campus on November 22 and handed the torch to Lady Vols Basketball Coach Pat Summitt, who carried it around Shields-Watkins Field at halftime of the UT-Kentucky football game to the melody of “Chariots of Fire.” Alumni, 685 of them, wearing T-shirts that proclaimed “I carry the torch for UT,” carried the torch on its 750-mile route through 30 Tennessee counties and some 80 towns and cities. Perpetual flames were ignited at UT Chattanooga, UT Space Institute, UT at Martin, and at the Memphis Medical Units.
