A strong student push for private telephones in residence hall rooms was begun in 1969. The additional cost of the telephones was to be added to residence hall contracts, but the sum was removed by the administration on grounds that it made the rooms too expensive for some students. In March 1970 representatives of South Central Bell announced that private phones would be added in Hess, Massey, and Greve Halls by fall quarter.
