TEACH/Here is a residency partnership between UT, Knox County Schools, and Hamilton County Schools that enrolls recent college graduates or midcareer professionals who have specialized in math or science-related fields and who have become interested in teaching. Similar to a medical residency program that provides on-the-job training for doctors, residents work in a mentoring relationship with a master teacher for one year, during which they work side by side with the mentoring teacher four days a week and take classes at UT Knoxville on the fifth day to earn both a master’s degree and a teaching certificate. Resident teachers are not salaried, but they do receive a small living stipend as part of their service. The program began in July 2010. Seventeen students were placed in mentor relationships for 2010-11—seven in Knox County and ten in Hamilton County. In November 2010 the program received $2.8 million from the National Science Foundation, through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program.
