In response to the joint resolution (H.J. Res. 715) designating Wednesday, May 3, 1978, as Sun Day and calling upon the president to issue a proclamation calling for its appropriate observance, President Jimmy Carter declared May 3, 1978, to be “Sun Day.” At UT a solar house on Alcoa Highway was open, commercial and homemade solar equipment was on display at the University Center Plaza, films were shown in the university center, and a discussion of the ethics of solar energy was held in the evening, featuring a member of the Religious Studies Department. Attendance at events was “exceptionally good,” according to coordinators of the day’s activities, although, ironically, the morning was cloudy and the afternoon brought rain.
