After turning down an offer to become the head coach of the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Washington Mystics, Summitt agreed, in April 2002, to become a player personnel consultant for the team. The one-year arrangement involved four personal appearances by Summitt on the Mystics’ behalf and involvement in player personnel decisions, including talent evaluation. She also was to provide advice on trade and waiver moves. Prior to agreeing to the consulting job, Summitt checked with the NCAA, and found that there was no rule that would prevent her signing a consulting contract with the Mystics.
