The School of Music and the UT band were relocated to five locations—Dunford Hall, Melrose Hall, Alumni Memorial Building, and the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building. The move took place following the spring semester of 2010 in order to allow construction of the 123,000-square-foot Haslam Music Center on the same site. In November more than a hundred members of the Pride of the Southland Band and other UT bands signed a petition to the chancellor stating that the temporary band room created from a gymnasium in the HPER Building was unacceptable because of noise transmission from the three adjacent gyms. Staff and faculty complained as well about music being played in Dunford and in Melrose Halls. Faculty and students complained about music classes in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building. Improvements were made to the band room over the winter 2010 break to lessen the transmission of noise.
