The fact that the Jumbotron in Neyland Stadium was always on, even when the stadium was not in use, became a student issue because of the institutional emphasis on conserving energy and helping students to become more environmentally conscious. The Athletics Department released a statement on February 2, 2009, indicating that the Jumbotron was a Sony product, and Sony no longer manufactured video boards. UT’s Jumbotron was the last of its size and make and could not be turned off because it then could not be turned back on. The Athletics Department also indicated that it was searching for a new Jumbotron for the upcoming football season and a new board that could be turned on and off. The plan was for the new Jumbotron to be on only for events in the stadium or for recruits.
