In November 1999 the Daily Beacon obtained a copy of The Pirate, which listed the names of members of the Scarabbean Society and stated the society’s purpose, “To be nameless in worthy deeds,” and touched off a campus-wide debate about the secret society by naming members such as Student Government Association President Will Carver, SGA Vice President Gealita Sylvester, and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Tim Rogers, and exposing rumors that the group met in secret to accomplish their goals. SGA commuter senator Henrique Vissotto introduced a bill in the November 23 SGA Senate meeting requiring Scarabbean members of SGA to answer questions publicly about the secret society. Although the move to consider the bill was voted down immediately, SGA executive officers and about 30 students engaged in a heated question-and-answer session following the SGA meeting. The exchange centered upon administrative influence and conflict of interest on the part of SGA leaders. At the December 3 meeting, Vissotto withdrew the bill, saying that the exchange following the November 23 meeting had accomplished the purpose of the bill.
