Student Issue, 1991—SGA Adviser

Outgoing Student Government Association President Chuck Younce and Treasurer Michael Dunthorn explained the ineffectiveness of the SGA in its representation of student interests in a Daily Beacon article as being a result of administrative pressure from Vice Chancellor Phil Scheurer, as manifested first by SGA Adviser Jerry Askew, dean of students, a member of Scheurer’s staff. Tim Potter, the newly elected SGA president, agreed, ran for office on the issue, and in April sought to have Askew replaced as SGA adviser by a faculty member of SGA’s choosing. Askew responded that the administration connection was important but that he believed that SGA should have several advisers.
