Approximately 60 students assembled on the University Center Plaza in April 1985 to protest a variety of issues of concern about UT administration and policy, including the parking ticket situation (too many tickets, too few spaces); tuition increase (12 percent) and the amusement tax (17 percent); lack of noncommuter parking; inconsistency of discipline policies; and an incident of perceived religious intolerance by an administrator. Only one administrator, Ombudsperson Charles Cleland, was present. Reese, Boling, and Scheurer said they didn’t know of the event. Organizers said they had specifically told Scheurer. As reported in the Daily Beacon, Boling said, “Why should I go to a student protest? At this point, if the students have one tomorrow, I won’t show up tomorrow.” He also indicated that he did not respond to public invitations.
