Baseball “Dog Pound”

In 1995 baseball Coach Rod Delmonico recognized the antics and the spirit of the UT fans who collectively had become known as the “Dog Pound.” Pound members frequently waved brooms urging the Vols to a series sweep, played trumpets (“Taps” was a favorite, just as an opposing pitcher was about to release the ball), and generally heckled the opposing team. No member of the Pound was allowed, according to DelMonico, to curse or to make racial remarks toward the visiting team. But two favorite targets for heckling were body size and embarrassing acts committed by opposing players.
