City of Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe began honoring UT coaches and athletes by naming city streets on campus for them in 1991, with the naming of Johnny Majors Drive for football coach Johnny Majors following the second consecutive SEC title win. In May 1997 Pat Head Summitt Drive recognized legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt, and in 1997 also, Ashe changed Yale Avenue to Peyton Manning Pass. He also personally sought the renaming of Stadium Drive to Phillip Fulmer Way and the designation of Chamique Holdsclaw Drive in May 1999, the renaming of South Stadium Drive to Tee Martin Drive in March 2000, and the designation of Todd Helton Drive in 2001. In 2004 the city council established a committee to evaluate future street name changes in Knoxville, including those on the campus of UT, and established a policy of seeking input prior to renaming streets. In 2014 Sherri Parker Lee requested that the name of Leinard Lane, which connected Neyland Drive with athletic facilities for softball, volleyball, and soccer, be changed to Joan Cronan Way. UT concurred, and the city council renamed the street.
