Charley Mcalexander of Albuquerque, New Mexico, saw Vol mascot Smokey during the televised 1967 Orange Bowl game. Taken with the antics of the dog, Mcalexander wrote to the Adawayhi Pep Club, offering to make a “spirit horn” for the club by carving a cow horn and etching on it the name of the university and a picture of Smokey, if the club would send photographs of Smokey. Keith Richardson, Adawayhi president, corresponded with Mcalexander, and the club received a horn, which it immediately put into use. Following his designation as an honorary member of Adawayhi, Mcalexander carved eight additional spirit horns for cheerleaders to use at football games. Mcalexander was a branch manager at the US Post Office in Albuquerque, whose hobby was whittling hunting horns from cow and goat horns and etching designs upon them.
