Soon after the university created the Food Service Department in 1966, plans were made to establish a Central Food Services group, including a full-scale bakery. This occurred after the department had terminated the arrangement where the College of Home Economics operated the cafeteria in Sophronia Strong Hall. It looked forward to additional food service installations that would be incorporated into the additional housing to be built. The Tysaman building on White Avenue had been bought in 1964 and was renovated, in part, to provide appropriate space for this function.
In order to ensure that the UT Bakery was not competing with local bakeries, a UT ID was required to purchase baked goods. When the Tysaman building was sold to provide space for the 1982 World’s Fair, the bakery moved to its current location in the Presidential Court Complex. The move relaxed the UT ID requirement, since the bakery was then on campus. Following a complaint from Paul Morgan of Wade’s Bakery to county commission, the UT Bakery reinstated the requirement of a UT ID for provision of baked goods. Its main purpose is to provide baked goods for all campus dining facilities.
