Saturn Partnership

In spring 1987 UT and Saturn Corporation entered into a mutual assistance agreement that included projects in research and personnel-related areas. Officials from both organizations signed a formal agreement to form a long-term relationship “to share and exchange information and resources” of mutual benefit. In the first major project, the UT Graduate School of Library Science’s computers were linked with Saturn’s computers in Troy, Michigan—later linked to the Saturn Plant in Spring Hill, which opened in 1989. Another project involved landscaping of the Spring Hill site using UT agriculture interns and Saturn maintenance personnel. UT also aided in the development of a transportation system that included rail and trucking systems to and from the plant. The agreement with Saturn was the first of its kind between UT and a corporation.
