ROTC, Sponsors

The first instance of Military Sponsors—female students chosen by the US Army cadet unit leaders and the military band as representative of the best characteristics of UT women—appears in the UT yearbook for 1915, representing the 1914–15 school year, prior to formation of the ROTC. Sponsors that year were Evelyn Hazen, May Morgan, Georgia May Ferris, and Alice Calhoun. In 1926 the Army ROTC unit joined with the student body’s election of the “most popular coed” to make the coed chosen the Honorary Cadet Colonel of the Military Department. In that year and years that followed, the Honorary Cadet Colonel wore a specially designed uniform and marched in dress parades. In the 1935 Volunteer, the ROTC Band sponsor also sported a uniform, and in the 1936 Volunteer, all sponsors had uniforms similar to those worn by cadets.
