ROTC, Army—Flagpole and Monument

On Veterans’ Day 1994, the Army ROTC dedicated a flagpole and monument honoring veterans past and present outside Stokely Athletics Center. The students dug the foundation, the cadets purchased the flagpole, and the cadre put in the cement. A granite bench and a monument were donated by Island Home Memorial Company. The monument is inscribed: “A grateful nation remembers our fallen heroes. The University of Tennessee Armed Forces Veterans, freedom’s volunteers.” The United States flag, the Tennessee State flag, and a World War II commemorative flag, all three of which had been flown over the US Capitol at the request of Congressman Jimmy Duncan, were installed on the flagpole. Tennessean Major General Richard E. Davis, deputy-commanding general of the 18th Airborne Corps, who held a master’s degree from UT, was the ceremony’s guest of honor. The ceremony marked the 150th anniversary of the Military Science Department at UT and the 50th anniversary of World War II. The granite bench was donated in honor of retired Colonel James L. McAuliffe (a longtime student affairs administrator at UT) by his widow and daughter. When ROTC units were relocated because Stokely Athletics Center was being razed, the monuments and bench were removed for relocation to the new site, the former Panhellenic Building.
