Marshall Ramsey graduated from UT (College of Business) in 1991. While a student, he drew cartoons for the Daily Beacon and, after establishing an enduring relationship with Charlie Daniel, editorial cartoonist for the Knoxville Journal (later, Knoxville News Sentinel), he penned cartoons for the paper while Daniel vacationed. During his cartooning at UT, he received several recognitions from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In 1993, while a student at Kennesaw State College in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia, he received the John Lochner Memorial Award from the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists—the top prize awarded to college editorial cartoonists.
Editorial cartoonist for the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 and 2006. He is a syndicated cartoonist, and his work appears in hundreds of newspapers and magazines. He is also an illustrator, having joined with his cousin, Dave Ramsey, to illustrate children’s books, principally about finance (five of which appeared in Chick-fil-A Kid’s Meals). He has published two books of his cartoons and has illustrated Nobody’s Poet for author and chef Robert St. John. A melanoma survivor, he founded a race to raise money for melanoma research and awareness of the cancer and has received awards for his work in the general area of cancer awareness and funding.
