As a by-product of the partnership of the College of Human Ecology (now part of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) and ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Dean Jacky DeJonge became the first UT dean to have a racehorse named for her. Associate Vice Chancellor Hardy Liston suggested the name “Dean Jacky” at a dinner honoring EXXON representatives when EXXON’s James M. Miller indicated that he was considering naming a new foal for the dean. Dean Jacky, a dark bay filly, foaled on March 22, 1989, by Diamond Shoal out of Eventual by Wajima, with 10 percent of her winnings to go to the college. While the college’s share of the winnings totaled less than $500, the photograph of Dean Jacky that hung in the Dean’s Office until Dean DeJonge returned to teaching was a constant conversation piece.
